Statement by Prime Minister Carney on United Nations Day

OTTAWA, ON , Oct. 24, 2026 /CNW/ -- "More than 80 years ago, in the aftermath of the Second World War, nations came together to build a new foundation for peace and cooperation. Canada helped lay that foundation, playing a pivotal role in shaping the United Nations (UN) Charter in 1945. Its founding principles have never been more important.
The post-war order is eroding, and the underlying logic that justified multilateral cooperation is more compelling than ever. The climate emergency is intensifying, artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly, and armed conflicts are destabilising entire regions. In this fragmented world, cooperation is not an ideal – it is a necessity. No country, no matter how powerful, can manage these challenges alone.
The UN remains the only global platform bringing together 193 Member States to promote peace and security, uphold international law, and protect human rights. The question is not whether multilateralism can survive, but how it must evolve to meet today's challenges.
Canada will defend the fundamental values of freedom, human rights, sustainability, and solidarity. As the UN's sixth-largest contributor, we will work alongside fellow Member States to fulfil the organisation's mission and uphold the principles of its founding charter.
As we build Canada's strength at home, we will work with partners abroad to defend human dignity, secure lasting peace, and create greater prosperity for all. Because our strength as nations is not measured only by what we achieve alone, but by what we accomplish together."
